How To Secure Your Blog From Hackers

by Sathishkumar on August 24, 2011

As everyone knows, building a blog requires a lot of hard work. You need to get the website up, make it pleasing to the eye and functional. Then you need to really work to create a reader base, keep them coming back with more and more content. Not to mention you want to try to make some money off your blog, so that requires affiliate marketing, banner ads and things like that. In short, a blog is a serious investment of both time and money, so the idea of hackers exploiting your blog is a terrifying thought. Thankfully the below tips and tricks will help to keep your blog safe and secure from people who want to steal your blog.

Secure Blog From Hackers

How To Secure Your Blog From Hackers:

Stay Updated:

Most blogging sites frequently update their programs and it is vital, for you as a blogger, to download these updates as soon as you can. The way it works is that blogging sites are constantly trying to find, and fix the bugs that they notice in their programming. These bugs, once identified, are a potential gateway for hackers to enter and harm your blog. If, however, an update you’ve downloaded has fixed the bug, then hackers cannot enter through that way. In short these updates are free, easy to install and add an important level of security. There’s no reason not to update, so you should do it as soon as possible.

Secure Web Hosts:

Before even making your blog, or perhaps if thinking of moving it, it’s important to research good Web hosting companies. Look for companies that have a proven track record of keeping their users safe, with constant updates and strong security measures. These hosting domains provide an extra level of security to any blog and, hopefully, will convince an opportunistic hacker to look elsewhere.

Police the comments:

While they may not be hackers, comment spammers can do just as much damage. Without supervision, spammers can fill a blogs comment and forum section with material that turns a friendly section into a virtual toxic waste dump. These spammers can really create an unfriendly atmosphere on your blog which will scare away readers. This is something to strongly avoid, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on any and all comments to reign in spammers as soon as possible.

Backups:

Suppose the worst happened? Someone hacked into your blog and deleted everything. All your content and comments are destroyed, everything that makes your blog what it is wiped out in an instant. If you didn’t back up your material then you are in serious trouble. All your hard work is gone without a trace. If, however, you backed up your content faithfully then you have nothing to worry about. Whether it’s through a database, or some other storage technique, a backup system is absolutely vital. It can mean the difference between the total destruction of a blog, and a mere annoyance.

Conclusion:

While no blog is ever truly safe from the threat of a hack, these above safety tips can keep your blog more secure.

nothing can be totally secure but yes we can be precautious only.. and do make regular backups as sometimes server crashes happen so its better to be prevented then to be cured always…

A little bit of common sense goes a long way too.  I use Askismet and it is great at catching spammers.  If it says comments are spam it’s best to use an ounce of prevention than having to spend hours to cure an infected blog.  Trust me I’ve been there.  It’s better to lose a few comments than have to spend days or weeks bringing your blog back up.  However, I agree that nothing is 100%, but using the tools and common sense can get you pretty close.
