Tips For Effective Copywriting

by Sathishkumar on August 4, 2011

One of the best tips for effective copywriting and to write the best content for your sales letter, is to just act like you were speaking to a friend, and the rest will flow easily. If you’ve ever noticed, on online sales letters, the letter will start off with Dear Friend, and it will end up with Sincerely, and the person’s name, but it will be a person’s signature instead. This personal down-to-earth form of marketing will garner instant affability and trust in your audience and get them to feel like they’re on the same page as you, pun intended.

Effective Copywriting Tips

Putting your customer or audience on the level of trust with you is one of the most important secrets in copywriting, and any way that you can do that is a good step in the right direction. Some people enhance this level of trust with testimonials from other customers with pictures, names, dates, locations, and stories. Others allow users to post checks with their earnings if it is a work-at-home money opportunity. But, none of this can happen effectively without first establishing copywriting in a copywriting voice that is friendly and familiar. You are much more likely to trust a friend than a business trying to sell you something. Sometimes, the person may actually be your friend, or a potential friend, and they may be getting a percentage of your earnings if you sign up under them. They are fully capable of networking with you, discussing, and talking after you sign up so that they can help you help them make money.

Copywriting is an art, not a science, but there is a lot of science involved. The copywriting greats established rules that haven’t been deviated from for years. 50 years ago, the greats sat down and wrote books, and these same principles that stood out in Reader’s Digest and the New York Times full-page ads 50 years ago are making their way into informational product websites where consumers can purchase access to information, maybe information that will make them rich or give them a foot up into a higher echelon of the business community.

Copywriting should never sound forced or determined, it should always sound normal and easy, and it should flow as easily as conversation. Pretend that you were sitting across from your friend and discussing something with them, and then translate this impulse to the web when you are writing a sales letter that you hope someone will read and sign up for something with. The sales letter is all you’ve got to make a sale, and you want to act as much like a friend as possible, or it will look like just another advertisement.

Part of the reason that people hire copywriters is because they don’t want their sales letter to look like ad text. If they wanted it to look starchy and artificial, they would have hired someone to make an ad and made it garish and loud. The point is for you to avoid this style as a copywriter and not let the same mistakes that advertisers have made in being too aggressive come across in your copywriting. If you choose to let your writing take the approach of aggression, you will turn audiences off, and they will not be coming back to your sales letter to sign up. It’s just a fact of life that people prefer colloquial conversation.

I think your copywriting tips are spot on. Often, when people read sales letters or other forms of copy for that matter, they want to know what’s in it for them. I think it’s important to address this in a sales letter, but at the same time keep the copy flowing naturally and on a personal level.
