Top Four Tips for Starting a Small Business

by Sathishkumar on January 29, 2011

Who doesn’t want to be the boss of their own life? If people were asked to put up their hands in answer to the affirmative, then there wouldn’t be many takers. We all like our freedom, both personal and professional.

This desire to rule one’s own destiny is one of the main drivers behind the establishment of small businesses. However freedom is not the only motivator, because with business also comes the potential to build a lucrative and profitable operation. This is quite a compelling set of benefits to say the least. It is therefore unfortunate that many aspiring business owners are daunted by the idea of starting a business, but yet it is also understandable.

Tips for Small Business

The world is cluttered with business advertisements, shop fronts, brand names, discount vouchers, junk mail, competitors, products, and yes even failed business ventures. As such, it is not unreasonable for a business wannabe to feel that there’s just no room left for them in the business world. However, the reality is that the marketplace is always ready for a terrific new business, and that a lot of the time business success has more to do with process and execution than it does with having an original idea. So given that we don’t need to have the world’s best business idea, how do we go about starting a small business? The following four tips might help you in your journey of looking for a small business opportunity:

1. Fill the need – if you take a look at some of the world’s most successful companies, you will often find that they were started in response to a widespread need. It is common for great business empires to be built upon the foundations of simple products and services, such as coat hangers, cardboard boxes, house cleaning, and pet care, to name a few examples. So, if you are hoping to work for yourself or to start a new business, the first thing to do is to reflect upon your skills and experiences, and decide if they can be put to use in helping to fill some sort of unmet need. It is much less risky to start a business which utilizes your core competences in this way, rather than trying to start a business in an industry that you know nothing about.

It’s also worth noting that you don’t need to start a global business venture, and that great success can sometimes be found in the neighborhood close to home. Just take a walk down your main avenue or street and have a look around. Does it need a bakery? Dry cleaner? Office supplies shop? Outsourced accounting firm? Wholesale plumbing supplies? Web design agency? What’s missing? Can you fill the need?

Also remember that even though you don’t need to launch a multinational corporation from the get-go, you’re also not constrained by the fence of your backyard either. One of the best ways to reach a geographically dispersed audience is to establish an online presence. This could involve setting up an ecommerce site, developing a web application subscription based business, or even establishing a service based business that offers fulfillment via the channels of the internet. Depending on the industry, you could also start by selling your own services; you may be surprised at the level of demand that exists for freelance workers. For example, there are millions of people who work from home completing all kinds of simple clerical or secretarial projects for clients all around the world.

2. Look beyond your core interests – you might not have a lot of interest in operating a carpet cleaning business, but what about an earth-friendly carpet cleaning business? There are all kinds of business possibilities that might help you to meet some of your personal goals in life, even though they might not have seemed like an obvious first choice. Of course, this isn’t limited to eco-friendliness, green initiatives, or other altruistic endeavors, and can encompass a huge range of business types. So step outside of that proverbial box and open your eyes to what might be a top-notch small business opportunity.

3. Be prepared – the advent of the Internet makes it possible for you to purchase a domain name, setup some web hosting, and give your business a public face very quickly. You could feasibly have a website up and running in a matter of a few hours, but you may find that this is not a wise way to launch your business. Firstly, you will want to undertake extensive market research and develop a business plan that stands up to professional scrutiny. It takes time and planning to develop a good business model. Furthermore, the Internet is awash with excellent resources about developing a strong online presence. You need to have thought about the goals of your website, how you will attract visitors, and how you will ensure that these visitors convert into business sales or leads. If the idea of optimizing your website performance seems overly daunting to you, then hire the help of a professional. But either way, make sure you have these bases covered well in advance of beginning to do business. There are many sad stories of “million dollar ideas” going down the drain because of poor planning and start-up execution.

4. Use the tools – although you may not want to write a blog, use Facebook, delve into Twitter, or engage in pay-per-click marketing, the fact is that these are some of the most powerful marketing tools available in the modern business world. Yes, you could stick to local newspaper advertising and word of mouth referrals, but even the smallest of small businesses are like to benefit substantially from an effective online marketing strategy.

So there we have it, four tips that will hopefully start you on your way into new business adventures. Just remember, the most important success factor in business is hard work and perseverance. It’s not a free ride, but it is definitely a land of endless opportunity.

I like the “be prepared” part in this article. You really have to be prepared before you start. Starting an online business takes time and patience and you need to be prepared for this.

Good tips, but I would add “Find good advisors” to your list. New business owners especially need a good CPA and Lawyer to start out on the right track.
