Twitter: a Waste of Time, or a Pot of Gold for Online Shop Owners?

Social Media” seems to be an annoyingly common buzzword these days, but it is often used without any sort of real meaning. Lots of advice on using social media exists for small businesses, but very little of it is actually good or worthwhile. Let’s take a closer look at Twitter, and whether or not it can actually be used to help a small business.

Twitter for business owners

Knowing whether or not to use social media as an online business owner can be difficult. Many businesses use it, but not effectively, and so they are just wasting their time. If you don’t have many followers or your followers don’t use Twitter a lot, or even if they just ignore you, then Twittering is pointless for you. Twitter can be a virtual pot of gold for you, however, if used it correctly, because it can drive many customers to your site.

Do Check:

One of the goals of business use of social media is to get people to friend / follow you, as opposed to just subjecting them to some advertising that you paid for on TV. So if you are going to use Twitter, then you actually need to post content that isn’t purely promotional – no one wants to follow someone who posts straight ads.

Twitter can be worthwhile if you regularly post compelling content, and then occasionally mix in promotional content. Tweet funny or interesting things, or tweet about the latest news or trending topics. This way, your followers will actually appreciate following you because you add value to their twitter stream.

Within the other content that you post, mix in ads. Don’t make them obvious ads – people hate ads on the internet. However don’t attempt to disguise them, by talking about one thing and then posting a Bit.ly link to your site – do be honest about them. Otherwise people will think you’re just spam. Once again, try to make your ads actual content that people will be interested in – maybe tell them something they didn’t know about a product, or advertise a really good deal that you have.

Do Check:

Whether you use Twitter or not is really a personal decision, and there isn’t necessarily a right or wrong choice. Traditional advertising can work too, but Twitter is a good way to brand yourself and to use the latest trend to drive valuable customers to your business.

Nice debate, but its utterly depend on the followers we had. Having tons of followers from irrelevant niche wont help for online shop owners. So twitter will be beneficial, if and only if we have quality and related followers to our niche.

    • http://www.techiemania.com Sathish

Hi Thiru, I agree with you only to some extent. People think that having followers in irrelevant niche, won’t help them at all. Well it is a wrong thought. For example, If you are a real estate blogger and if you have technology related followers in your Twitter account, you might think it won’t help you at all. But the thing is your business is reaching a new range of followers, who may become your clients sometimes in the future. I hope you will get my point.

Probably sathish ! It may happen very low like 1 or 2%. Better we concentrate on that sure 98%. ( But I really appreciate your reply dude)

        • http://www.bayofblog.com vijay

I too agree with Thiru, and want to tell one thing if we choose wrong niche, we ll get a chance to attain huge bounce rate as we know…

          • http://thiruseoblogs.blogspot.com/ Thiru

Thank god, you got my point vijay. If we are having irrelevant followers to our niche, definitely there is no conversion rate (sales) in traffic. ( Especially you mentioned like online shop owners)

          • http://www.techiemania.com Sathish

May be you are right. But what I was talking before is traffic and its not about sales. Anyways, Thanks for adding your point here.

    Nice article.
I’ve found Twitter to be very worthwhile, particularly as you’re able to search for people within your chosen niche. I’ll promote my own blog and articles, but I’ll also make sure I interact with people and make plenty of re-tweets.

    • http://www.techiemania.com Sathish

Hi Kirsty and Sathish – The point about small business owners just wasting time if Twitter is not used correctly is well made. There are two camps about followers: whether seeking mountains of followers is the way to go or if trying to develop just those who are in your niche would be best. I agree with Sathish that gaining followers from another niche is good because you might never encounter them if you just stick to those from your own “niche neighborhood.”

Something else small business owners should consider is determining what they want Twitter to do for them. Then they can make this a part of a focused social media strategy (which doesn’t have to be so hard or lengthy — just written down).

Thanks for sharing your take on this.
