Who Lives Longer: Apple or PC Users?

by Sathishkumar on December 20, 2010

To buy a PC or a Mac – that is the question. For years geeks have fought tooth and nail to answer this question. But recently, another even more burning question has risen in the battle of the computer geeks: who lives longer: Apple or PC users? This is not a debate for the weakhearted – depending on the answer to these questions, people will cry, go into debt and possibly have their lives changed forever.

Apple Mac or Windows PC

In order to figure out whether Apple or PC users live longer, we’ll first have to determine which computer is better. With people spending more and more hours per day on the computer, the kind of computer you own will drastically affect the quality of your life, which in turn will influence how long you’ll live.

The factors we’ll be considering are cost, security and customer service.

Cost:

Mac computers are notoriously more expensive than Windows computers. Walk into any electronics store and just compare prices – most of the computers retailing for under $1,000 are Windows, while those over $1,000 are typically Macs. However, when you actually start investigating why Macs cost more, the price starts to sound pretty reasonable. For example, Apple notebooks tend to have better quality processors, cases and batteries than Microsoft notebooks, and are usually slimmer and lighter as well. Also, Macs come with the Apple iLife suite, which contains many excellent and helpful programs. Windows computers, on the other hand, only come with bare bones programs and require you to purchase many of the programs already loaded on Macs.

Security:

It’s a fact that more people own Windows computers. It’s also a fact that computer hackers are interested in causing as much trouble as possible with just one virus. Therefore, most viruses, Trojan horses and harmful programs are designed to attack Windows computers. That doesn’t mean Mac computers are automatically safe – it just means that they are less likely to be attacked by hackers.

Customer Service:

Mac hands down has the best customer service. You can take your broken computer into any Apple store and have a real person look at it. Windows, on the other hand, only has customer service available over the phone, and half the time you’re not speaking with an expert on your computer. They’ll send you to some website with DIY information on how to fix your computer. If something really goes wrong, they’ll halfheartedly send over a repairman – which often they should have done the second you reported the problem.

Conclusion:

In terms of cost, Macs and PCs are pretty well matched. However, in terms of security and customer service, it looks like Macs will help you live longer. Consider what having bad security and bad customer service does to a person’s health! The sheer stress of having a virus or a broken computer combined with intense frustration as you yell yourself hoarse on the phone to a guy you can barely understand will raise your blood pressure. And if you’re constantly dealing with high blood pressure due to your computer, this is a sure fire way to dig yourself an early grave. So buy a Mac and hopefully, you’ll live a bit longer than those pesky PC users. Although there are likely 5000 health factors that are more important than the type of computer you choose!

I think most of the people owning windows will definitely wish to use Mac . but cost and customer service are the problems which makes to think before choosing Apple.

Well made comparison. I too feel that windows is definitely better in terms of pricing. At present mac may be less attacked by hackers but once more people start using mac hackers will start attacking mac too.

Well said Mukundan. It wont take much time for hackers to attach Mac, if they want since they are not 100% secure against hacking threat. Anyway, thanks for your comment here.

There is old tension between Apple and Microsoft. Apple may have beaten Microsoft in its net worth. But still Windows is the most used operating system in the world. Apple’s success is mostly related to iPhone, iPod and iPad. The real competition is between mac and windows.

You’re exactly right. Mac just cant beat Windows, since Windows is the popular and widely used Operating system. Thanks for your comment.

It clearly shows, why we need to stick up with Windows, if we don’t want to spend much.

Hello! Sathish i have to say this:-
We were taught to use windows pc in our schools and colleges(Indians) and Mac about them we haven’t heard in our schools(Whose name is this???).I left my school 4 years ago (now in college haven’t left or completed the studies yet)and got into blogging which made me know everything even that damn Macintosh. When i buy it i have to use more of my time and energy to understand its working and system.Which will fill my life with more pleasure. So i must say use everything(If you are capable of) and this won’t affect your life.

Hi Jagan, Thanks for your response about this comparison. Well, I must agree with all the points you have mentioned here. Even I haven’t heard anything about Mac, until I got a system in 2006. Well, Now I can work on any operating system since I am trained with all of them.

if apple decrease it prices to good amount then we can see mac grow like ipods but if the mac users increase to a drastic level then it will also increase the security concerns. Good post. liked it

Hey Himanshu, you got it right. But I am sure Mac won’t decrease their prices and we won’t see many people using it. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment here.

You have made an excellent and factual comparison between the Mac and PC regarding their cost, security and customer service issues, but I think both Mac and PC have their own pros and cons. Most Mac users can’t even talk without using their hands; it’s a computer and not a social movement whereas using PC you can do it.

Often times, PCs will have compatibility issues with iPods, iPhones, etc. while Mac computers don’t have that. In the end, the decision should be based on your own personal needs and not what everyone else is saying.

I’m a Mac and PC user. I much prefer my Mac but more people use PC so you have to have both to be in the business world. This will change in my opinion in the next couple years.

I use both Mac and PC. Basically, a PC is good for gaming or if you need to use a lot of software that might be unavailable on a Mac. But otherwise, for word processing, email, internet activities and everything else, I prefer the Mac.

I don’t think you can compare between the two in any way. Windows is an operating system; entirely different from a pc. And windows blue screen, that only ever happens because software companies suck at making software and drivers that work.

There is no such thing as no support, windows has always had amazing support and I love Microsoft’s work on that part.

Next time your PC breaks, i recommend you don’t blame windows but rather spend a bit more money and buy a better system; most times it is the PC manufacture that has gotten it wrong, not windows.

What about the mac too? When it becomes standardized around the globe, is there really going to be any surefire way that will prevent the hackers from also converting over to mac and doing as much damage they can to the system?

The cost of a mac is also in an existence to make you think that what your actually buying is of quality. Instead of comparing a $900 pc to a $2500 mac, why not compare a $2500 PC to a $2500 mac from a good quality and trustworthy brand, mac is not going to win over in any way.

What a post. I have never thought of this. You know I really do not mind any whether a mac or PC but I think a mac is cool and does so much better in performance than a PC. However you also need to compare the quality. Just like the above commenter has said compare a mac and PC of the same price and see which one gives you better results. Both are good.
